Christmas in Guardians of Azuma
From Freyashawk, once known as the 'Mistress of Harvest Moon', a very heartfelt wish to all for a season filled with light and hope.
Here is a gift for Christmas from the creators of Guardians of Azuma. Christmas is not a Festival in Azuma but a recent update gave us special Quests from the 'Story of Seasons' that came with special Rewards. This is one of the final rewards after you tame a little alpaca in the Winter Wilds and give it a home in one of your development areas. The reward actually is a Recipe so you can choose to make and place one in every village or none at all.
Guardians of Azuma is part of the Rune Factory series and perhqps more thwn qny other game in the series, very much grounded in the traditions and culture of Japan. Nonetheless, it is very universal and in the characters of Clarice and Mauro especially who are both from other lands and have their own cultures, there is sharing. Clarice, who is from Germany, although her land bears a different name, will share the story of the 'Happiness Cake' and then give you Recipes for tradirional German dishes. Mauro who is Italian, although his land likewise bears a different name, constantly speaks admiringly of Azuma while still sharing his culture.
Both Clarice and Mauro follow local spiritual customs and offer prayers at the shrines.
The philosophy underlying this game, with a theme of forgiveness even towards an enemy like Clarice who held a weapon named Godslayer and was determined to destroy Azuma completely, is inspiring. It is Clarice herself who finds it difficult to forgive herself, but the kindness, acceptance and growing affection from the people of Azuma gradually heal her tormented soul.
The Winter Wagon Decoration with its Christmas Tree and gifts is simply one of many messages of tolerance and belief in univeral spirituality that can be expressed in a multitude of different ways.
