Subaru as a Husband
Here is the best from Subaru... and I hoped marriage elwould be like that, but it was a far cry from ideal.
Kai in contrast only was absent once because he had been attending a Meeting of the Gods on the lawn outside the Shrine. I do not know if I would have tolerated Subaru better had I not compared him constantly to Kai.
I invited Subaru recently to the snowfield. Rather to my surprise, he disliked the experience.
'Y'know what? Some one else might enjoy that more than me. It's just not my thing. Sorry.'
I now believe it is because he hates the cold. His teeth chattered constwntly when I spent the Snow Festival in an igloo with him. Not 5he most fun I ever had. Inviting him to the fields, however, made him compare the experience to a dream: 'Not to overexaggerate, but that was like a dream. Let's do it again sometime.'
This dislike does not show up in his Profile. His fear of spiders is listed. There is an event in the Shrine after marriage where he is utterly undone by a baby spider and you must carry it out of the Shrine to calm him.
Marriage to Subarubto me felt a little like I had another child, and a somewhat difficult one at that.
I wonder what Clsrice would be like as a wife. Subaru is haunted by his fall from grace, but instead of being grateful, like Clarice, thst he has been accepted and embraced by every one, he has a chip on his shoulder.
Once he said something to me like: 'You are the hero and I am the villain.'
He hsrps on that. No ome else ever mentions it. He has a bitterness and resentment that never will be fully erased.
Kai, on the other hand, made homeless by Ura, goes back and GIVES him authority in the Underworld. In conversation, he will tell you that everything he endured was a blessing in disguise because he never would have met you otherwise.
Peoplw constantly demean and disrespect him but he shrugs it all off while declaring that it is you who empowered him. He makes you an essential part of his story.
I never felt that with Subaru. While loving you, he nonetheless resents you, not only for saving his life, but as a rival. I thought the childhood bond would make him a good husband. Instead, he carries his sense of rivalry with him.
Unlike Ikaruga who matures and lets go of his early resentment of children as irresponsible and feckless, Subaru really does not mature psychologically. He coasts with people like Tsubame and Kosatsu because he is a merchant at heart. He improves their businesses and is described as charming.
He does intervene when Hisui tries to act as a matchmajer setting you up with a rich stranger. He definitely is possessive and jealous. As a mattwr of fact, I liked my own character the least when I was interacting with Subaru. I displayed a lotbof petty jealousy that made mrle very uncomfortable. I never have believed that jealousy was evidence or proof of love. It is something quite different that views the other person as a possession to be kept from others. It also is a sign of insecurity. The great poet Jubran and I believe Rumi as well wrote that true love allows the beloved to fly free whether the beloved is a partner or your own child. My own words would be: true love opens doors to freedom and never forges chains.
Yet the existing relationship between Subaru and my character is the traditional romantic relationship found throughout the ages in most cultures. And traditionally, the beloved welcomes signs of jealousy as proof that he or she truly cares.
I documented all the little events with Subaru and will include them here when I have time.
